“You have to go through the fire. Avoiding the pain is why most people never resolve it. You have to dig deep, sit in it and ugly cry.”
~Vanessa Williams

The beauty of feeling everything – the joy, the pain, and everything in between – is that it means you’re alive. (Image via http://www.123rf.com)

Would you believe I was sitting in a waiting room in a doctor’s office when I came across this quote in a magazine? I felt like it was waiting for me to find it (no pun intended) because I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, about what makes us feel alive. And the ability to feel deeply is a big part of it. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Good post …I wish I learned this lesson early in life.

I think there are times in life where it serves us to avoid the pain. But I agree with Vanessa that eventually we need to feel it to resolve it. Thanks for commenting!

What a brave little plant! I guess it’s true that not confronting painful issues generally means they are never resolved.

Thank you for saying that, Sheryl. It took me over a half hour to find what I felt was the perfect photo to go with the quote. Happy New Year!

I think this is very true… We have to acknowledge the pain, and let ourselves feel it, before we can move on. Otherwise, we spend a lifetime avoiding it. Thanks for sharing this quote, Kim!

Yes, this is true…sad but true. Out of pain, comes healing.

I guess that’s why we feel so much better after a good cry 🙂

Yes, “ugly cry” is the key….the real deal…the, from-the-gut(ter), feeling that engenders cathartic release….I love the quote you shared, and the spirit in which you’ve shared it….thank you! 🙂

We all say we have to go through the fire but we all want to do it without getting burnt.
It’s like I’ve always said…everybody wants to go to heaven it nobody wants to die.
We can’t have it both ways.
Love the quote, Kim.

Hi George! Happy New Year. Glad you liked the quote. It’s funny you say that about heaven and dying, because I was recently thinking about the same thing…
